Paul Kraus, Filmmaker

With extensive experience in the film industry, Paul Kraus, filmmaker - surfboard shaper - and ukulele builder, takes us behind the scenes in his groundbreaking documentaires, to meet some of the most influential people in these areas -- both today and years past.

Filmmaker Paul Krausí film, The ShapeMakers, is an important historical document. His informal, filmed interviews with some of the greatest shapers to have ever held a planer, offer a fascinating glimpse into who these people are, what they do and how they do it. And, at a time when surfboard manufacturing might be about to radically change, Krausí interviews are indeed timely.

In his film, The Jumping Flea, he kicks off with the 1879 arrival of the ukulele in Hawaii. He tells the story of the instrument's development -- and various periods of popularity and decline -- in a straightforward narrative punctuated by lots of performance clips. This film makes a strong case that the music produced by interesting players, both historically and today, goes a long way towards making the world a better place.
